Through our equity stake in the Empirical Technologies Corporation (ETC) we are currently exploring the promising development of a non-invasive, continuous blood pressure measurement technology.

Currently, continuous BP monitoring is only available through the invasive use of catheters affixed to pressure transducers and embedded into a patient’s artery. A suitable non-invasive replacement has great potential to be a significant, disruptive new technology. One such possibility is ETC’s BP Guardian.

Developed to function as a wrist sensor, the device features a miniaturized design based on a piezo-electric sensor and proprietary pulsation-exteriorization as well as electronic filtering and amplification techniques. The device’s signal quality is sufficiently high as to allow detailed contour analysis of the radial pulse shape, which is influenced by factors such as systolic and diastolic blood pressure, arterial distensibility and the pressure impedance effects of the artery/arteriole interface. By tracking the relative temporal and amplitudinal relationship of the component pulses it is possible to perform blood pressure measurements as well as vascular health assessments.
